This day is completely free for you to explore Sorrento. Mythological home of the Sirens, the sea nymphs with voices of such sweetness that sailors were lured to their deaths on the rocks. Sorrento’s lure today, is primarily to the international traveller. Perched on 150 foot cliffs at the southern end of the Bay of Naples and opposite the pretty and romantic isle of Capri, Sorrento is a lively resort that recalls the days of the Belle Epoque.
During high season, some parts of the town can seem like there is a permanent carnival taking place, whilst the semitropical gardens of the cliff-top hotels offer peace, quiet and magnificent views across tha bay to Naples and Vesuvius beyond. Take an elevator down to the narrow volcanic sand beach with its bathing pavilions built out into the sea, or stroll to the fishing harbour of Marina Grande for lunch. Later perhaps, explore the fashionable boutique of Via San Cesaero, probably the best shopping area on the coast.
Sorrento – 7° Overnight
Day 8 – 9 – 10 – Positano – Amalfi coast
After breakfast in your hotel drive along the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) one of Europe’s most breathtaking. Cliffs terraced with scented lemon groves sheer down into sparkling seas; sherbet-hued villas cling precariously to unforgiving slopes while sea and sky merge in one vast blue horizon.
The pearl of the Amalfi Coast is Positano, the coast’s most photogenic and expensive town. Its steeply stacked houses are a medley of peaches, pinks and terracottas, and its nearvertical streets (many of which are, in fact, staircases) are lined with voguish shop displays, jewellery stalls, elegant hotels and smart restaurants. Look closely, though, and you’ll find reassuring signs of everyday reality – crumbling stucco, streaked paintwork and even, on occasion, a faint whiff of drains.
One day don’t miss to visit Amalfi. It was founded (according to legend) when the girlfriend of Hercules was buried here. Its heyday was the 10th and 11th centuries, when it was a powerful maritime republic. In 1343. this little village was destroyed by a freak tidal wave caused by an undersea earthquake.
